CHSC is proud to be featured in an upcoming art show entitled, “I Can, I Did” at the JCC of Greater New Haven.
The show will celebrate an opening reception Sunday, April 27 at 11 a.m. at the JCC of Greater New Haven, which is free and open to all.
This exhibit highlights the work that our talented artists did with artist-in-residence John Guzman as part of our partnership with the Yale Center for British Art, under the direction of CHSC Art Director Tina Menchetti. The show also celebrates Autism Acceptance Month.
About John Guzman
John Guzman is a painter born and raised on the South Side of San Antonio, Texas. A self-taught painter, Guzman previously pursued printmaking while studying at the Southwest School of Art. Guzman was selected as a Studio Fellow at NXTHVN in 2021 which led him to New Haven, Connecticut. His work has since been featured in distinguished art fairs and galleries, including: The Armory-NYC, ZONA MACO -CDMX, Museum solo exhibition at the Blaffer in Houston, Sean Kelly Gallery in New York and Real Artways in Hartford.
“Fragmented human forms remain a central theme in my work. I assemble hands, feet, knees and teeth to explore unpredictable compositions of the body. These arrangements are my interpretation of physical and mental states of existence. Through my process of cutting, scraping and carving into heavy bodied paint, I intuitively discover new compositions to work towards. My work is the byproduct of experiences, memories, and a reflection of my environment,”
“My time with the students of Chapel Haven Schleifer Center has lifted my spirit,” Guzman said. “Being able to share my passion with an enthusiastic group of individuals reminds me of why I paint. Without instruction or hesitation, I witnessed a group of individuals carry out the most difficult task toward trying something new and that is, to try. Each of the artists created a piece of work with free association, art being produced at its most honest state of being,”
This program is in collaboration with the Yale Center for British Art, led by Linda Friedlaender, Senior Curator of Education and Matt Capezzuto, EdD Educator Accessibility Working Group.
